The History Of Bridgeport, Chicago

Bridgeport is a working-class neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side that is also one of the city’s oldest and most politically powerful areas. Chicago officially annexed Bridgeport in 1863, and its mayors reflect nearly 70 years of political clout.

Bridgeport is recognized for being the home of the World Series Champions, the Chicago White Sox, who play in the shadow of Guaranteed Rate Field. The south branch of the Chicago River forms Bridgeport’s northern border, with Pershing Road (south), Bubbly Creek (west), and Stewart Avenue (east).

Charles Lee, a farmer, was the area’s first settler in the early 1800s. Lee lived at Fort Dearborn but had huge farms in what is now Bridgeport. Many settlers erected modest log cottages along the Chicago River’s South Branch.
